This is one of John's more sculptural pieces; the bulbous shapes are shell forms and are hollow (i.e. derive from the throwing process and are not applied later).
The vessel is wheel-thrown. John first throws a cylindrical jar before working it out into a more rounded shape and adding the shell shaped hollows.
The vessel is completely unglazed; the shiny surface that can be seen near the rim is where ash from the wood firing kiln melted onto the surface of the pot.
